As someone who can always use a reminder to eat more fruits, I appreciated the opportunity to make a dish that has me do just that. Based on an article from Delish, people in Spain and Mexico will eat 12 grapes at midnight as quickly as possible, one for each of the 12 months ahead, to bring good luck. In Greece, pomegranates are “thrown across the floor releasing a sea of seeds that symbolize fertility, life, and abundance.” In Asian cultures, oranges and honey are believed to “bring good fortune, wealth, and money.” With these fruits in mind, I decided to combine them and create my rendition of a New Year’s fruit salad.
Ingredients
- 1 orange
- 12 grapes (one for each month of the new year)
- 1/2 of a pomegranate*
- zest and juice of 1 lime
- 1 Tablespoon of honey
- 1 Tablespoon of finely chopped mint
*To cut down on time, I ended up using store-bought pomegranate arils. In case you didn’t know, pomegranate arils refer to the clear, reddish seed pods. For the longest time, I had mistakenly thought this was interchangeably named “pomegranate seeds.”
Directions
- Prep the fruits. Peel or cut the skin off the orange. Cut into segments. Halve the grapes or leave whole, depending on your preference. Cut the pomegranate in half and separate out your desired amount of pomegranate arils.
- Make the dressing. In a small bowl, zest and juice one lime. Add the honey and whisk together to combine. Stir in the chopped mint.
- Combine. Add the fruits to a separate bowl. Drizzle the “dressing” over the fruits. Toss gently to combine. Enjoy!
I will say, while this was not the most harmonious fruit salad, it was still fun to make this colorful combination of fruits that I enjoy. Plus, the dressing gave everything an interesting zing that made me enjoy it more than fruit salads I’ve previously eaten. Hope you give this a try or at least find these fun facts to be interesting!
