In honor of it being Mixology Monday (I don’t think it’s a real thing but I’m going with it), today’s “something boozy” features sangria. To be honest, I had chosen this for Day 6 because I already needed red wine for the beef wellington and I didn’t need that much, so I am trying not to let the rest of the wine go to waste. It was a nice break from regular cooking since today was a long day.
I specifically looked for a wintery red wine sangria recipe and came across this spiced winter sangria which I liked because of its simplicity. You can watch me make it in my TikTok.
I went a little rogue from the recipe, as I sometimes do, by adding some lemon. I also didn’t have brandy on hand, so I was hoping it wouldn’t affect the taste too much. Oh yeah, that’s the thing about sangria – you have to wait at least 2 hours for the flavors to “coalesce” as my fiance put it. I didn’t have the luxury to wait that long, so my taste test tonight may not be an accurate representation of the drink. I will include a taste update tomorrow once it has had time to sit in the fridge.
As we approach the end of the first week, I am starting to feel some doubt creeping in about whether it’s really worth me putting all this effort in. I feel like Julie Powell in the beginning of the move Julie & Julia going, “Is anybody there?”
I am definitely pulling all my weight and skills together for this – I am a good writer, a decent cook, and a food enthusiast so it only makes sense that I would do something like this. It’s tough though, sticking to this challenge every day, coming up with ideas that will be appealing to a mainstream audience, but also works with my schedule. For instance, I have to make sure that I put easier recipes on weekdays when I know that I am going out to eat for dinner because the only way that I’ll cook that day is during my lunch break. I am also trying to keep a good balance of challenging, sweet versus savory, varying cuisines, and recommendations from my friends.
I have found myself staying up very late for many nights in a row now, trying to type out my blog post. Hopefully, as I continue with this process, I will get better and faster. For now, cheers to the start of a new week.
